Agfa Graphics  announced that 25 customers in North America have been selected to receive the GreenWorks™ Environmental Recognition Award. GreenWorks is an exclusive program created by Agfa Graphics that recognizes and supports environmental efforts in the graphic communications industry. The newest GreenWorks customers from Canada and the U.S. are acknowledged to be exceptionally proactive in their efforts to minimize their ecological footprints while maintaining the highest quality standards of professional graphic communications.

Printing companies become part of Agfa’s GreenWorks program through a nomination and review process by an outside agency. To qualify, they must use either Agfa Graphics’ :Azura chemistry-free plates or :Amigo low-chemistry CtP plates. They must also utilize a number of other environmentally-friendly products and be involved in other efforts such as recycling, reducing waste, utilizing alternative energy sources in their plants and other similar ventures. They stand out as graphic communication companies who are more environmentally sensitive and are marketing themselves in that way.

Austin Graphics is honored to be one of only 79 companies in North America to receive the Greenworks Environmental Recognition Award for Excellence in Environmental Printing.

Our current status as an environmental leader results from the following installations and implementations:

Installation of Chemistry-Free Printing Plates
By eliminating the chemistry traditionally used when producing printing plates, we improved the quality of our customers’ print jobs and our delivery times, while reducing the negative impact on our environment.

The Use of Vegetable and Soy-Based Inks
These inks are less harmful to the environment than petroleum-based inks and are widely recognized as the environmentally-friendly choice.

We recycle or reuse any unused inks.

Choosing FSC Certified Papers as our House Brand
All products carrying the FSC Logo are independently certified as coming from forests that meet the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Principles and Criteria of Forest Stewardship.

To learn more about Forest Stewardship Council go to http://www.fsc.org/

Recycling our Offcut and Scrap Paper
We donate to local churches and daycares for their creative and craft programs.
Traditional recycling methods for paper, cans, plastic, and tin have been in place for many years.

What is Screen Printing?

Posted by: amy  //  Info About Printing

Screen printing is a durable & weather proof printing process. There are a variety of materials & products available. T-shirts, site signs and magnets are good examples of a screen printed product. In screen printing, or silk screening, ink is spread across a fine open-mesh fabric that is held in place within a frame. A squeegee is used to force the ink through the open areas of the fabric to form the image.

Artwork printed onto vellum is placed onto a framed screen. The screen is coated with a photo sensitive emulsion, it is held in place under vacuum and then exposed with intense light which burns the image into the screen. Any non-image areas become permanent, which blocks the ink from passing through everything except the imaged area. Ink is poured inside the frame and a squeegee is drawn across the screen pushing the ink through the imaged area onto the printing surface. The inks are usually the consistency of thick paint. Due to the thickness of the silk screening ink, prints coming off the press cannot be stacked; they must either pass through a dryer or be separate on racks to air dry.

Although automatic presses are available some silkscreening is still performed by hand. The process while relatively slow, is versatile enough to be performed on almost any clean flat surface.

Levi & Friends

I thought I should share some pics of my best bud, Cali. Sometimes you’ll catch her at the office instead of me. She’s pretty cute and sometimes it sucks that she gets to go with Mom instead of me, but I’m learning to get over it :)

This is one of my fav. shots with Cali when she was still a young pup.

If I did this, I think I would probably get yelled at, but whatev!

Weekend Away

Posted by: apple  //  Adventures of Apple

As some may or may not know, two weekends ago I went on a little visit to see a couple of my friends. Although my hostess was sick I did have a very enjoyable visit (and I hear it was tremendously cold at the office, so I’m glad I went on a little holiday). I finally got my pictures developed and thought I should share.

Here I am with my best friend Charlie, I haven't seen him since the orphanage days.

Adventures With Apple - Day 15

Posted by: amy  //  Adventures of Apple

Well, after a weekend getaway at Amanda’s house, Apple is back in the office. She has spent the first part of the day making sure everything is where it is supposed to be and be very friendly with everyone.  We all missed her yesterday and are glad to have her back!
